Need to know

  • Regular school attendance provides students with the best chance for a successful future – however that looks. 
  • In Tasmania, young people are required by law to stay in education and training until they turn 18 years of age or meet a leaving requirement. 

It’s important that students are job-ready when they finish school. School is the best place to help children and young people get the skills and tools they will need for the future.

By going to school, students are giving themselves the best chance of a successful future and the job or career they want.  

Did you know? 
In Tasmania, young people are required by law to stay in education and training until you turn 18 years of age or meet a leaving requirement. 

Leaving requirements

Completing year 11 and 12 (this may include an Australian school-based apprenticeship);

A full-time Vocational Education Training (VET) program at TasTAFE or other Registered Training Organisation;

An apprenticeship or traineeship with an employer;

4

A combination of these options, if the provider(s) allow.

Young people with full time employment (or other specific circumstances) need to apply for an exemption so they can leave education and training early.
