Tips on how school leaders can support their school community to maintain regular student attendance.

- School leaders are responsible for staff being aware of their role in improving school attendance.
Principals, assistant principals and advanced skill teachers make up the school leadership team.
The school leadership team makes a difference every single day by empowering the school community to reach their full potential.
Improving attendance is a shared responsibility.
The role of the school leadership team
The leadership team support the school community by:
- Providing clear information to students and families about school attendance requirements.
- Providing help to parents and carers struggling with school absence.
- Advise teachers or support staff to read through the attendance scenarios with parents. They provide examples of common attendance situations and the recommended actions.
- Ensuring schools have effective measures to track and follow up student absences.
- Providing school staff with information on attendance requirements. Including their role to track and promote regular school attendance. This may include professional learning.
- Ensuring new staff and relief teachers are aware of attendance requirements and responsibilities.
- Contacting the Strong Families Safe Kids Advice Referral Line (ARL) for any matter relating to school attendance where there are concerns for child wellbeing or safety. This support must be engaged in line with your school’s process.
- Engaging child safety, health or relevant support services where required.
- Communicating current information about temporary school closures to staff and families. Closures may be due to adverse weather, bushfire, emergencies or other incidents.
