Need to know

  • Turning up to school every day means you get to see your friends and classmates and keep engaged.
  • If you are having problems getting to school, it is important that you talk to your teachers and parents/carers so they can help and support you.
  • There are many reasons why making it there isn’t always easy. But if you can turn up it will be worth it.
  • Below are ways you can help yourself, so you don’t miss out.

It all starts with turning up

Whatever you want to do in life, there is a pathway to take you there. It all starts with learning and support for wellbeing. With an education, resilience and life skills, anything is possible.

Regular school attendance will help you gain the skills and knowledge you need for success both now and later in life.

If you are having problems getting to school, it is important that you talk to your teachers and parents/carers about it. There is lots we can do to help and support you to attend school. Remember, it’s ok to ask for help whatever your individual situation or circumstances are.

How to set yourself up for a good day

Below you will find some tips to help you get the most out of your school day:

Create a morning routine.
Know what class activities are on each day (for example, which day is sport or library). You can do this by having a copy of your timetable at home.

Give yourself enough time.
Make sure you’re ready for each school day including your uniform, books, bag and lunch. Don’t forget breakfast!

Be on time, every day. Monday to Friday.
They say it takes two months for our brains to create a new habit. So just take it one day at a time.

Refuel and stay hydrated throughout the day.
Help your child or young person pack lunch the night before. Ensure they take a drink bottle to school and if your school has a breakfast club or lunch program – encourage them to get involved! Being hungry can affect concentration and motivation.

Get a good night’s sleep.
It’s amazing what a good night’s sleep can do to help your child or young person learn and stay engaged with school.

Set some technology boundaries.
We are all familiar with endlessly scrolling, only to feel exhausted and unmotivated. Why not give a family tech agreement a go?

Stay chatty and ask for help.
Chatting with family, a friend or a teacher if you have any concerns about school or if something is making it difficult to get to school. Asking for help if schoolwork or other activities are challenging.

Remember, it’s ok to reach out and ask for help and support.
