Years 11 and 12 in high school
To study Years 11 and 12, you don’t need to go to a college.
Need to know
- You can study a wide range of Tasmanian Assessment, Standards and Certification (TASC) and Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses at your high school that count towards your Tasmanian Certificate of Education
- High schools and colleges work together to support your transition and help you study the right subjects for your future plans
- You have choices in how you set up your program of learning to meet your needs and goals.

All government high schools, colleges and district high schools offer Years 11 and 12. This gives you more choice about where you want to complete your final years of school.
Many schools across the state are already running these programs. You might be able to:
- Stay at a school where you feel comfortable
- Keep learning with teachers you get on well with
- Study at a school close to home
Some courses are available online or through shared enrolment with a nearby school. This gives you access to more courses that interest you, though some may require you to study at another campus.
High schools and colleges work together to make sure you study the right subjects for the future you want.

How does Year 11 and 12 in a high school work?
High schools offer a range of Years 11 and 12 courses which count towards your Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE). Many schools offer courses which are unique to the needs and industry in their region.
School and college courses meet your learning and training needs by:
- delivering the Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE) or Tasmanian Certificate of Educational Achievement (TCEA)
- delivering vocational education and training (VET) courses
- preparing you for further study in the VET sector or at university
- preparing you for employment in an apprenticeship or traineeship
- undertaking online courses which count towards your TCE through Virtual Learning Tasmania (VLT)
Lots of high schools have Trade Training Centres as well.

How can I study my chosen Year 11 and 12 program?
The choice is yours!
There are many ways that you can set up your course to meet your needs and learning goals.
You can study at a high school or college:
- for your whole program
- for part of your program and have a ‘shared enrolment’ with a different College, high school or in an online learning program through Virtual Learning Tasmania (VLT)
- at a school or college in combination with an Australian School-based Apprenticeship.
